Vacancy for Field Officers Positions.

The Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN) is an International organisation with activities spread in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Our mission is to improve livelihoods of communities through delivery of practical information using modern technologies.

ALIN wishes to recruit 3 field officers with a passion to work and support community development initiatives to create positive equitable and sustainable change. The Field Officers will be based at established community Maarifa (Knowledge) centres located in rural semi arid regions of East Africa.


The Maarifa centres
Through partnerships with other organisations and using the Focal Group model, the Network has established Community Maarifa Centres in the East Africa region with a mandate to facilitate information and knowledge exchange projects. The centres are equipped with ICT tools and library materials for community use.


Duties and Responsibilities
Overall management of the Maarifa centre, writing development-related articles for publishing in ALIN’s information products, dissemination and management of information flow at the Maarifa centre, monitoring and documenting impacts of ALIN’s information on livelihoods, researching and documenting projects of interest in the locality for publication, building the skills of the local community in writing, editing, and use of computers and other ICTs for information management and communication.



Education and Competency requirements
•Degree or Diploma holders in Communication, Development studies, Journalism or Media Studies, from a reputable institution.

•One year continuous experience working in an ICT environment within the NGO sector.

•Experience in production of quality information products such as reports, articles, newsletters, booklets and other multimedia outputs for use in areas of low literacy levels.

•Be computer literate and able to communicate fluently in spoken and written English, Kiswahili and knowledge of community local languages where the Maarifa centres are located.

•An understanding of issues affecting arid lands communities.

•High level communication skills, including: Facilitating groups, Rhetorical (verbal presentation and discussion) skills.

•Ability for self motivation and to work with minimum supervision.

•Commitment and willingness to live and work with multi cultural communities where the Maarifa centres are located.


Duration
Successful applicants will be engaged for a period of ONE-YEAR on a renewable contract.
