Conducting research to the highest international scientific and ethical standards to improve the health of the people of Kenya.
The Centre of Geographical Medicine Research Coast (CGMRC) is one of the ten centres of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). It is home to the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme and is well known internationally for its work tackling malaria and other infectious diseases, particularly bacterial and viral childhood infections. The Programme was formally established in 1989 as a partnership between KEMRI, Oxford University and the Wellcome Trust. It conducts basic, epidemiological and clinical research in parallel, with results feeding directly into local and international health policy, and aims to expand the country's capacity to conduct multidisciplinary research that is strong, sustainable and internationally competitive. Strong community links are at the heart of the Programme, with an emphasis on capacity building and training to build scientific leadership.
KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme is an internationally renowned health research Programme that is committed to developing research capacity in the East African Region. Several PhD studentship positions commencing in January 2011 are available at our Kilifi site.
These studentships will provide an opportunity for East Africans to carry out their PhD studies within a high quality research environment under the supervision of internationally renowned researchers.
Studentships are available in the following research areas
·         Microarray Analysis of Malaria Parasite Populations (1 studentship)
·         Host genetics and susceptibility to malaria (1 studentship)
·         Health Economics (1 studentship)
·         Health Systems Research (1 studentship)

Applications are invited from East Africans who have completed at least a Bachelors degree and achieved an upper second or first class in biological sciences or health sciences (e.g. medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and public
health), social sciences, and economics A Master’s degree is not a requirement for successful application.
