The approach used to job hunt and contact employers for information and the frequency with which this is done influences the individual job hunting experience. Probably the most important point to remember is that the employer’s behavior is most likely not directed personally towards a particular candidate. It’s just the nature of job-hunting in a buyer’s market.

Put yourself in the employer’s shoes and think of the many referrals, walk-ins and phone requests they receive on a day to day basis. Then think of the various approaches you’d use to assist each of these individuals and what you’d expect from their presentation. You may not be able to take up a new post course for various logistical reasons however, gaining new skills even as a ‘volunteer’ or by researching on your own during your will help towards securing a job and increase your ‘employee value’. The internet, for example, is full of advice so all is not lost.

Be unique;
you want to stand out from the throngs of millions of job seekers? Do something that’s remarkable, that will distinguish you from others-whether it’s hand-delivering you applications and requesting for an appointment with recruiting professionals or otherwise capturing attention in a positive, highly professional way or building up some scheme, you’ll be amazed how the probability of getting others to respond increases.

However, never directly ask individuals in your network for a job. Instead, ask for information, referrals, and advice and this is where most of us go wrong. Expect rejection but don’t let it stop you. Some people will simply be too busy to offer you any time but if you are genuine and sincere in your request for information and advice, place the person you want to meet in the position of trusted advisor. In this way you increase your odds of receiving more positive responses to your requests.

Do not give up on yourself: At this point, it’s common for us to blame ourselves, the economy, the government and everyone else for not having secured a job even after trying so hard. This too may sound difficult considering that you do not have enough or no capital at all. Look in to various ways of acquiring just enough to take you through the first step of opening a business of whichever nature you are passionate about, this may not apply to everyone all the same. Secondly, if you have a business idea which is not ‘new’, how can you make it unique, faster, better, more improved than what’s out there already? Embrace the situation and look new: joblessness is devastating and upsetting. Thoughts of how you will keep a roof over your head and food on the table are expected in this case. Your provider status may be lost but not gone forever so use this time to reflect on what you want to do now.

Being organized is the trick. Set up a system to help you keep track of valuable professional information, establish professional contacts and note who you need to contact and when you need to initiate this using what methods.
