Heshima Kenya is a nongovernmental organization based in Nairobi, Kenya dedicated to identifying, protecting and empowering unaccompanied refugee minors, especially adolescent girls, through our specialized shelter, education and advocacy programs. The Girl's Empowerment Program (GEP) is comprised of a diverse group of participants from different countries of origin Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi) with varying educational, language, and literacy levels.

Position Description
Heshima Kenya is a nongovernmental organization based in Nairobi, Kenya dedicated to identifying, protecting and empowering unaccompanied refugee minors, especially adolescent girls, through our specialized shelter, education and advocacy programs. The Girl's Empowerment Program (GEP) is comprised of a diverse group of participants from different countries of origin Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi) with varying educational, language, and literacy levels. Using the curriculum created by Heshima Kenya, combined with a student centered teaching approach, the GEP Basic Education Teacher will carry out program goals and objectives related to the classroom and GEP participants.
Under the supervision of the Co-Executive Director of Kenya Operations and the Youth Coordinator, the GEP Teacher will undertake the following functions:
1. Assist the GEP Youth Coordinator with design and development of GEP curriculum; Lead classroom activities, providing individualized support to participants; collect necessary materials to maintain a high level learning environment for all participants.
2. Work closely with volunteers, screened by the Co-Executive Director and the Youth Coordinator, to facilitate one on one tutoring with GEP participants after having identified areas in need of additional work, and provide materials and support to volunteers as necessary.
3. Identify and develop working relationships with external adult education programs and testing centers for HK participants who may pursue Kenya Primary Certification. Coordinate and monitor participants' progress and attendance in said programs.
4. Maintain standardized and unit testing and evaluation schedule in classroom providing updated scores and evaluations to the Youth Coordinator on a monthly basis.
5. Assist in compiling and writing weekly and monthly notes on each participant enrolled addressing work progress and evaluations of participant's participation.
6. Record and track each participant's performance. If and when a participant fails to attend without notification take necessary action and report to the Youth Coordinator for immediate follow up.
7. Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to each participant served in any and all Heshima Kenya's Programs.
8. Effectively and respectfully handle issues of discipline and behavior in the classroom while referring participant's to Welfare Officer if follow up on any particular issue is needed.
9. Attend weekly staff meetings when requested and contribute feedback and ideas on how to strengthen programs.
10. Complete weekly and monthly program reports and action plans
11. Learn and understand thoroughly Heshima Kenya's mission, programs and goals.
12. Represent Heshima Kenya in a highly professional and dignified manner.
Qualifications:
1. Post graduate degree in Education.
2. Fluent in English and Swahili; fluency in one refugee language desired.
3. Must have Kenya Teaching Certificate with experience in teaching multi level classrooms.
4. Some knowledge of refugee related issues in Kenya.
5. Superb data collection, organizational, time management skills.
6. Proficient in Microsoft Office software and using internet as a resource.
7. Candidate must be flexible and able to work beyond class room times when necessary.
8. Must be highly organized, creative, detail oriented; have excellent interpersonal skills and work independently or with teams.
9. Must be a Kenyan citizen and present her national identification card, KRA Pin certificate, NSSF and NHIF cards upon request.
