About IOM

Position Title:MIDA Project Assistant
Duty Station:Nairobi, Kenya


Classification:G5/01 (UN Salary Scale for GS staff)
Type of Appointment:Three (3) months special all inclusive contract with possibility of extension

General Functions:

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Representative for MRF Nairobi and under
the direct supervision of the Project Officer for the QUESTS-MIDA, the Project Assistant
will provide operational, technical, administrative, coordination and programmatic support
in the implementation of MIDA projects in the Somalia Support Office. In particular he/she
will:

Essential Functions:

1. Assist in the implementation of the MIDA project activities, including maintenance of
the QUESTS-MIDA website and database (developing content for the website, and
facilitating Somali translation) and for USAID-funded MIDA activities, as well as the
creation of information materials (i.e., brochures and posters) and translation into
Somali, assist in the recruitment, selection and contracting of participants on MIDA
assignments, as well as support the reporting of activities under these projects; in
order to support the facilitation and process of bringing Somali Diaspora
professionals on short-term assignments in Somalia;
2. Assist to maintain the project-related correspondence and progress, technical
reports and documentation from missions in the Diaspora in Europe and North
America and in Somalia, compiled in Nairobi. Draft reports and possibly articles for
publication either per UNDP or USAID guidelines;
3. Draft periodic reports and formal correspondence and assist in dissemination to
relevant counterparts. Update potential applicants in the Diaspora, government
institutions in Somalia and interested organizations concerning the status of the
project;
4. Monitor status of the project, compile, summarize, and present basic
information/data on activities on a regular basis through relevant project staff and
compile either per UNDP or USAID guidelines. Present status updates to UNDP or
USAID, as directed;
5. Participate in discussions with USAID, UNDP, other UN Agencies, the World Bank
and other IOM missions, NGOs and government authorities on a programmatic
level. Represent IOM at meetings and conferences relevant to the project, as
authorized. Plan follow-up projects and budgets with other interested partners as
necessary in order to design similar projects. May be required to assist in
leading/co-chairing meetings and/or workshops;
6. Capture success stories from the project and develop content presentable to
distribute to donors;
7. Undertake duty travel related to project implementation in Somalia;
8. Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Higher Diploma in Social Science or an equivalent field of study;
2. At least 5 years working experience in programme development, implementation,
monitoring and reporting;
3. Minimum 3 years working experience in international or non-governmental
organization(s). Experience working in governance, development, or with Diaspora
populations an advantage;
4. Good writing skills (in English and Somali);
5. Proficient in Microsoft Windows. Experience with web design or video editing an
advantage;
6. Required IOM functional competencies: effective communicator, successful
negotiator, creative analytical thinker, active learner, team player and cross cultural
facilitator;
7. Have good interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a multicultural environment;
8. Excellent command of spoken and written English.
