Safaricom, which started as a department of Kenya Posts & Telecommunications Corporation, the former monopoly operator, launched operations in 1993 based on an analogue ETACS network and was upgraded to GSM in 1996 (licence awarded in 1999)

Safaricom Limited was incorporated on 3 April 1997 under the Companies Act as a private limited liability company.  It was converted into a public company with limited liability on 16 May 2002.

By virtue of the 60% shareholding held by the Government of Kenya (GoK), Safaricom was a state corporation within the meaning of the State Corporations Act (Chapter 446) Laws of Kenya, which defines a state corporation to include a company incorporated under the Companies Act which is owned or controlled by the Government or a state corporation.

Until 20 December 2007, the GoK shares were held by Telkom Kenya Limited (“TKL”), which was a state corporation under the Act. 

Following the Offer and sale of 25% of the issued shares in Safaricom held by the GoK to the public in March 2008, the GoK ceased to have a controlling interest in Safaricom under the State Corporations Act and therefore the provisions of the State Corporations Act shall no longer apply to it.
We are pleased to announce the following vacancy in the IT Infrastructure Department within the Information Technology Division.


In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below:

Principal Network Administrator
Ref: IT_PNA_OCTOBER_2010

Reporting to the Senior Manager IT Network Infrastructure, the job holder will be provided hands on management of the IT Network Support Team, LAN, WAN, Internal Voice Infrastructure, and Safaricom Data Center.

The job holder’s key responsibilities will be to:
    * Manage the network support and enforce network security within the IT LAN/WAN and the entire infrastructure;
    * Provide firewall administration and enforce all network policies and procedures;
    * Specification and deployment of enterprise network both on voice and non-voice;
    * Management of all active and non active network components, routers, switches, firewalls, hubs, modems, DTUs
    * Proactively manage the IT LAN/WAN network and enforce strong recovery policies to ensure that the maximum availability;
    * Manage the performance of staff in the section, define performance indicators and define goals and objectives for the staff;

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills & competencies:
    * Bachelor of Science in degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, physics;
    * CCVP, CCIP and CCNP are desired certification qualifications;
    * WAN/LAN interconnect working experience;
    * 5 years in networks: managing a network of 3000+ users;
    * Knowledge of Cisco IOS and proficiency in a wide range of networking LAN/WAN products and technologies;
    * Working Knowledge of Unix and Linux systems
    * Expertise in Internet Security
    * Attention to details and analytical thinking;
    * Good communication and project management skills;
